The School of Thought Lluís Vives examines the civic and economical reasons of the European Green Deal

The European School of Thought Lluís Vives, from the Universitat de València, organised the conference ‘El pacte Verd europeu com a compromís de totes i tots’ (‘The European Green Deal as a commitment of all of us’) through the UV European Documentation Centre, and as a part of the congress ‘The reasons of Europe’. The conference was leaded by Marycruz Arcos Vargas, director of the European Documentation Centre of the University of Seville, on the 26th of April at La Nau.

The strategy proposed by the Von der Leyen Comission related to the European Green Deal might be the one that requires a bigger dissemination due to its transversality and the social commitment it demands not only from the government but from civic society as well.

With this in mind, Marycruz Arcos Vargas gave the conference. It was organised as part of the programme of activities of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on Integration and Globalisation of the University of Valencia, which was presented by Professor Cecilio Tamarit at La Nau Cultural Centre on the 26th of April.

‘It is not just about getting Europe to be a climate neutral continent by 2050, but also about creating a new perception of the economic and social life in Europe. Almost all UE policies are affected by this point of view, not just regarding climate and energy, since this has a holistic dimension; or from circular economy to building renovation, from industry involvement to the international dimension of the EU role as a global leader in the Green Commitment’, pointed out the expert.

In order to carry out this paradigm shift, a regulatory transformation is not enough. ‘Citizen awareness is essential as well as a commitment to make this objective become a very needed and beneficial reality for the future of Europe and the world’, she added.

Nowadays, Europe is going through socio-demographic and technological changes that are determining a new paradigm of productivity, employment and prices which, at the same time, have forced a change in the definition on the role of inflation in monetary policy strategy, making it more flexible. This change, although apparently subtle, may, however, be of crucial importance in the coming years.

This was one of the main points to be analysed in Marycruz Arcos' conference: the consequences for the markets, for banks, for issuers, for credit and payments, as well as the risks that the change entails.

She studied law at the University of Seville, where she started her specialisation in Public International Law and International Relations with Juan antonio Carrillo Salcedo, her mentor. During the academic course of 86/87 and thanks to a grant by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, she studied a Master’s degree in High European Studies at the College of Europe in Bruges. From then onwards, European issues marked her internationalist dimension. Since 1997, she is a tenured university professor at the University of Seville, where she coordinates the Master’s degree in European Studies. She also leads the European Documentation Centre as well as the Europedirect Information Centre since 2008. She has worked in many topics on Europe’s development, such as institutional matters, the external activities of the EU, the need for an integrated migratory policy, the competition law and European health. She has also recently worked on Europe’s twin transition, focusing the interest in the Green Deal. She is currently the chaiperson of the Andalusin board of the Andalusian Council of the European Movement as a civil society involvement.

The School

The European School of Though Lluís Vives is a cultural project promoted by the vice-principal office of Culture and Society and managed by the General Foundation of the Universitat de València. It is arranged as a space for reflection and participatory and critical debate on current issues.
