Invitation to the presentation
Presentation of the book ‘Los moriscos antiguos murcianos’ in Murcia

On Thursday 16 February, at 6 p.m., the author José Pascual Martínez will present his book “Los moriscos antiguos murcianos. Expulsión, vuelta y permanencia (1609-1634)”. The event will take place in the Assembly Hall of the Principal Sabater Building in Murcia, in addition to the author, Francisco Chacón, Professor of Modern History at the University of Murcia, will participate.

Ancient Murcian Moorish underwent a special process of assimilation by which, at the beginning of the 17th century, the “wily moors” had incorporated the necessary mechanisms to “convert” from Moorish to Old Christians and integrate into the social fabric. For this reason, they remained outside the expulsion decrees until, at the end of 1613, the intransigence of Philip III and the Duke of Lerma, as well as that of their executing arm, the Count of Salazar, led them to decree their expulsion after declaring them bad Christians, with the argument that, if these Moorish were exempted, the whole expulsion enterprise would be ruined. However, the Old Moorish disobeyed the orders, remained in camouflage and then, with the help and connivance of Old Christians, provided cover for the return of those who had embarked. While the Crown seized, auctioned and sold the goods that the Moorish had not been able to sell before leaving their homes, the hunt continued for those who returned and those who had not left in order to expel them or condemn them to the galleys. This scenario of successive expulsions persisted until 1634, when Philip IV put an end to the expulsion decreed by his father.
