On Saturday 21 January, at 7:00 p.m., the book "Conversos valencians i Inquisició" will be presented in the Local Auditorium of La Pobla del Duc. Antoni Ferrando, full-university professor emeritus of the Universitat de València; Antonio Calzado, doctor in Contemporary History by the Universitat de València; and Jacob Mompó Navarro, author of the book, will take part in the event.
Religious hatred, which has too often played a leading role in the history of civilisation, has marked the history of the Jews, as is well known, with repeated frictions with the powers-that-be. The inflammatory hate speeches with which the masses of people were fed did little for social stability, and the mass raids on Jewish quarters forced Jews to convert to Christianity. The arrival of the inquisitors put the focus back on the converts and tragically prevented their integration.
"Conversos valencians i Inquisició" focuses on trials of the years 1481-1521 against Valencians in which, apart from the development of the processes, we can observe traces that introduce us to the day-to-day life of the families. There are signs of religiosity, but also of love, friendship, fear… And also of anger and betrayal. Through the documentation, we can see that many of those Valencian converts worked, loved, hated, insulted and loved each other in Valencian; in short, in the language that was their own.
