SYNOPSIS
Else, daughter of a Viennese lawyer, is surprised by bad news while on holiday in St. Moritz: her father has made a mistake and is threatened with criminal prosecution.
“Only four years after its publication, the novel by Austrian writer Arthur Schnitzler was filmed as an interior monologue. Shot during the first Winter Olympics, the film accurately reveals the lifestyle of the Weimar Republic's jet set. But what is most fascinating is its modern aesthetic: with long shots, one of the first camera movements and great actors, this portrait of a woman seems to be a film by Antonioni before Antonioni. One of the best works of Metropolis cameraman, Karl Freund, who had already worked with Murnau and Ruttmann”. (Ruediger Suchsland)
