La Germanía: a conflict in Renaissance Valencia

The University of Valencia, through the Office of the Vice-Principal for Territorial Projection and Society, in collaboration with Caja Popular presents the exhibition "La Germanía: un conflicto en la València del Renacimiento" which will be inaugurated on the 6th of May in the exhibition hall of the Town Hall of Llíria. A large team of specialist researchers has participated in the preparation of this exhibition which aims to raise awareness of "our" Valencian Germanía.

The Valencian Germanía (1519-1522) is one of these key moments in our history. The arrival of a new king, from foreign lands, the anti-lordly revolts, the emergence of new urban social classes that demanded their participation in public life, a world that ends (the medieval) and another that emerges (the Modern Age). The phenomenon is not only centred on the city of Valencia, but extends to several cities and towns in our territory. Towns such as Sant Mateu, Vinaròs, Peñíscola, Oropesa, Vila- real, Burriana, Almenara, Sagunto, València, Llíria, Alzira, Gandia, Xàtiva, Ontinyent, Alcoy, Elche, Alicante, Orihuela, etc. were protagonists of these events. The year 2019 marked the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Germania in Valencia.

With this exhibition made up of 30 exhibition panels created by some twenty researchers from the Faculty of Geography and History, the University of Valencia wanted to join in the commemoration and review of this event.

The exhibition will remain in Llíria until 30 May and will then travel around Valencia, where it will be on display in Alaquàs and Ontinyent, among other towns.
