Cinema to break down barriers

Globalized and hiperconnected but full of borders: physical, economic, political, social, cultural. That is our modern world, in which goods and money flow without a hitch, but people are subdued, not only to visas and passports but also to walls, concertina wires, border guards, gaols, shootings, racism and explotation. These are borders full of death and violence, at the same time, overstepped by the hope of those who decide to set out on the arduous journey from south to north to find a supposedly a better world or a better life, or perhaps, an easier one.

Few places around the world show better this reality than our South Frontier, the one that separates Africa form Europe, where the Frontex, spreads out to armour the Europe-Fortress. And all three of the Spanish films that define the series, explore this from different perspectives, among others, from the one that wants to leave, the one that does not want them to enter, and the one that has been born here and does not know how to deal with what is there. And in all three cases, from Africa. Adú (Salvador Calvo, 2020) y 14 kilómetros (Gerardo Olivares, 2007), show the immens difficulties of a journey in which there are too many frontiers to traverse, although just 14 kilometres distance both continents.

Also from Africa, but in a spanish city there nestled, Melilla, A este lado del mundo (David Trueba, 2020): a frontier city that reveals, as few, the huge and dramatic difference that suposes to be born on either side of the border.
