Lecturer for the Department of Theory of Languages and Communication Sciences and honorary research fellow for the Department of Cultures and Languages at Birkbeck, University of London, where he had been the Japanese Studies Programme director and taught modules related to Japanese Cinema, modern society and media in East Asia, film and memory, and comparative literature. Centeno is also Research Associate at SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies), University of London, where had been lecturer in Film Studies for the Department of Japan and Korea, coordinated the MA Global Cinemas and the Transcultural and taught Japanse Cinema and Wolrd Cinema modules.

His main research interests revolve around Japanese Cinema, World Cinemas, documentary and non-fiction formats, film theory, transnationality, representation of minorities, particularly the Ainu people, memory and postwar avant-garde. His current project Japanese Documentary Filmmaker Haneda Sumiko. Authorship and Gender Discourses is sponsored by Sasakawa Foundation, the Japan Foundation, Birkbeck Research Committee Strategic Funds, BIMI (Birkbeck Institute for Moving Images) and The Open City Documentary Film Festival London. Previously, his project "Japanese Transnational Cinema" (2018/19) was funded by Sasakawa and Daiwa foundations, Waseda and the Japanese Ministry of Education.

During his PhD studies, he was Research and Teaching Fellow at the University of Valencia (2009-2013) and Research Associate at Waseda University, Tokyo. Previously, he had worked as television director after serving as editor, graphic operator, continuity room operator and cameraman. His full-length documentary film, Ainu. Pathways to Memory (2014) was translated into several languages (English, Japanese, Spanish and Italian) and received several prizes from international film festivals and other institutions.

He is currently a steering committee member for the Asociacion de Estudios Japoneses en España (AEJE), convenor of the Visual Arts section for the European Association for Japanese Studies (EAJS) 2021 and acting as external examiner for the Japanese Studies degree programmes at Oxford Brookes University (2021-2025). He has been a fellow of the Summer Institute for East Asian Studies at Pittsburgh University, guest lecturer at the Summer Programme of Ochanomizu University, served as a visiting professor at Nanzan University in Nagoya, guest speaker at several universities in Latin America, Europe and Japan and visiting researcher Université Sorbonne Nouvelle Paris 3 and Goethe Universität Frankfurt. He was graduated from Universitat de València in 2006, where he received the School´s Extraordinary Award and after studying in Tokyo with a Waseda University scholarship.
